New year’s resolutions

This is my only resolution for 2011. Of course, this BIG resolution has a myriad small ones embedded into it, but I don’t want to set myself very precise goals. 2010 wasn’t a good year at all, even if it included some really good things, and the only thing I really want out of 2011 is for it to be better.
I want to get over things, find out where my stability went and focus on the things and people who make me happy. I want to make the most of what I have while I have it and stop worrying about a million stupid things that lead me nowhere. I want to focus on my studies and write an awesome thesis. I want to travel. I want to keep on doing creative stuff.
Ok, I lied. I have another resolution. To visit 3 places I’ve never been to before. This is a resolution that I’ve made every year for the past three years or so, and I find that it is very easy to keep and always ends up giving way to some of the highlights of the year.
Have you made any resolutions or do you think they’re a waste of time?

2010 film resolution

I had totally forgotten about my 2010 film resolution. Below is my progress so far. I’m not doing too well, but I can’t help it. I’ve been putting off watching those films for way too long! What are some must-see films that you’ve never seen? (I need to feel better about this).

1/25 The Dark Knight (2008) Christopher Nolan

So I started my 2010 film resolution by watching The Dark Knight. And I have to say that, contrary to what most people probably expected, I really enjoyed it (although I did spend the car chase scene checking my subscriptions on google reader). Something that probably helped is that the 1989 Batman film is one of the first ones I remember seeing at the cinema. I was 5 at the time and had to hide behind the seat every time the joker was on the screen. This didn’t stop me from getting absolutely obsessed with it, collecting the stickers and drawing Batman signs and homosexual looking Batmans all over the place, as you can see below.

I’m currently debating whether I prefer Heath Ledger’s joker or Jack Nicholson’s, and I am still undecided. I think both were brilliant and added different dimensions to the character, but Nicholson’s version still scares me more. I don’t know if it’s because it affects the 5 year old girl inside me or because his make up being more unrealistic and clown-like gives it a grotesque aspect that really gets to me. Or maybe it’s because we all know Heath Ledger is just a hot guy underneath the make-up. I hope you’re all proud of me.

2010: One of my resolutions

I always consider myself a pretty fake film student because there are so many films that everybody’s watched but I haven’t. It’s almost as if I got some of hidden pleasure everytime I hear something along the lines of “WHAT?!?!?! (horrible shock look) You haven’t seen The Godfather? And you study film? How can you?”. In order to avoid this, this year I am going to watch at least 25 of those films everybody thinks I should have watched years ago. I am sure the world will be a better, more pleasant place once this has been done. Here is my list.

  1. The Godfather
  2. Star Wars
  3. The Shawshank Redemption
  4. Chinatown
  5. Taxi Driver
  6. Alien
  7. Star Trek
  8. Goodfellas
  9. City of God
  10. Requiem for a Dream
  11. A Clockwork Orange
  12. Blade Runner
  13. Brazil
  14. Se7en
  15. Terminator
  16. Kill Bill
  17. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
  18. Down By Law
  19. The Dark Knight
  20. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
  21. One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest
  22. Reservoir Dogs
  23. Superman
  24. Untouchables
